FEASTS partner Japan Association for Cellular Agriculture (JACA) has published a comprehensive report on International Trends in the Safety and Regulatory Assessment of Cultivated Food and is kindly requesting feedback.

The report, published in July 2024, presents current regulatory and safety evaluations of cultivated meat and seafood products. It is based on a review of literature and complemented by surveys and one-on-one interviews with Japanese and international cultivated meat and seafood companies. 40 companies were engaged in finalizing the report while 10 participated in detailed interviews.
Key themes
The report consists of four sections: 1. a comparison of data which different regulatory authorities require to demonstrate the safety cultivated food; 2. a description of the manufacturing methods and substances used in cultivated food production; 3. an analysis of the hazards and control measures for cultivated food products; 4. a summary of recommended information to be included in a regulatory submission for market approval.
Ambition
The report aims to serve as a vital resource for stakeholders in the cultivated food industry in Japan. It offers a thorough understanding of safety assessment and regulatory trends, implemented mainly by domestic and international startups focused on the Japanese market. It addresses critical safety considerations and showcases the practices of industry players. As the next step, JACA‘s ambition is to facilitate consensus-building around measures, which need to be taken by cellular agriculture companies for safety under the Japanese regulations. As the next step, JACA is preparing an Opinion Paper interpreting the global safety trend of cultivated food under Japanese regulations.
