CRAFT consortium including FEASTS partners RESPECTfarms and Wageningen University and Research launches pioneering project – a pilot farm producing meat in bioreactors.
Europe Leads with a Global First
In a bold step for the future of farming, a European consortium will design and build the world’s first cultured meat farm.
The project, CRAFT (Cellular Revolution in Agriculture and Farming Technology), brings together innovators from across science, farming, and industry. Among them are FEASTS partners RESPECTfarms and Wageningen University & Research, along with Mosa Meat, Aleph Farms, Multus, Kipster, and Royal Kuijpers. Co-funded by the EIT Food Impact Funding Framework, CRAFT has secured €2 million in initial funding to design, build, and commercialize the first cultured meat farm, creating a farmer-driven business model for the protein transition.
By putting farmers at the center and testing how cultured meat can work in real farm settings, the project will demonstrate how new technology might power practical, fair, and resilient food system transitions.
Why it matters
Cultured meat is widely seen as a breakthrough technology that can cut the environmental footprint of meat production by using fewer resources such as land and water. CRAFT goes a step further: it aims to place cultured meat production directly on farms. By combining biotech innovation with traditional agriculture, it will develop a food production model that is more local, sustainable, and farmer-led.
Farmers in the lead
At the heart of CRAFT is a clear vision: farmers must remain central to Europe’s food future. The project will demonstrate how cultured meat can sit alongside livestock and crops, giving farmers new business opportunities while strengthening resilient local food systems.
Consortium
The CRAFT consortium brings together a range of expertise. RESPECTfarms leads on farm-level implementation and systems integration, while Wageningen University & Research (WUR) provides scientific leadership and bioprocess R&D. Mosa Meat contributes knowledge on cultured beef and regulatory pathways, and Aleph Farms focuses on product development and market readiness. Multus develops resource-efficient cell culture media, Kipster brings experience in sustainable agricultural models, and Royal Kuijpers ensures facilities are safe, efficient, and future-proof.
