FEASTS partners RespectFarms and S2Aqua have produced a video designed as a discussion tool for exploring the perceptions of primary producers about cultured seafood. Building on RespectFarms’ approach that successfully engaged farmers in dialogue about cultured meat, the video applies the same approach to the aquaculture sector. It translates abstract concepts into relatable narratives and visual examples that resonate with people whose livelihoods depend on the sea.
The aquaculture sector feeds hundreds of millions of people worldwide while confronting the pressures of climate change, dwindling resources, and shifting consumer expectations. Cultured seafood could complement, disrupt, or transform this sector depending on progress in research, regulation, and new business models. FEASTS firmly believes that any decisions relating to farmers and aquafarmers must involve them directly.
The video presents both the perspective of a traditional aquafarm and a forward-looking vision of how aquaculture could evolve through technological innovation and a transition towards greater sustainability. By holding these two realities side by side, it invites aquafarmers to see themselves as essential participants in shaping the future of their sector.
Rooted in FEASTS’ commitment to responsible innovation and its Farm-to-Fork perspective, the video explores aquafarmers’ perceptions, concerns, and potential pathways to integrate cellular agriculture into existing business models. It reflects a core FEASTS conviction that a sustainable food system cannot be built without the active participation of primary producers.
The video is intended for use in workshops, roundtables, and stakeholder consultations, where it supports moderated dialogue and critical reflection on cultured seafood production scenarios. Beyond these activities, it will be shared more widely to extend the reach of FEASTS, supporting knowledge exchange with aquaculture producers, industry stakeholders, and policymakers across Europe.
